Bahamas Christian Council Wants Laws on Gambling Enforced
Nassau, Bahamas: President of the Bahamas Christian Council, Bishop John Humes, has strongly urged the Government of The Bahamas to enforce the existing laws regarding gambling in The Bahamas. Bishop Humes spoke in response to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham's recent comments in Parliament that the government was looking at changing the laws to enable Bahamians to legally gamble. Several highly successful casinos operate in The Bahamas but the law makes it illegal for Bahamians to gamble. While the Prime Minister sees the existing laws as unenforceable the Christian Council is calling for the enforcement of the law. According to the Bahama Journal newspaper, "The Florida Lottery conservatively estimates that $US100 million is spent every year by Bahamians playing the Florida Lottery." The newspaper also reports that "At last count, there were 29 web cafes in New Providence believed to be operating illegal numbers houses."
