EAC-CYNET Addresses “Sex in the Church”

EAC’s Caribbean Youth Network (EAC-CYNET), in cooperation with the Guyana Evangelical Fellowship’s youth arm, has begun a series of church programmes entitled “Sex in the Church” among churches throughout Guyana.

According to Pastor Eworth Williams, Executive Director of EAC-CYNET, “For too long talking about sex in the church has been a ‘no no’. As a result we are seeing an upsurge in sexual immorality, morals are slowly decaying and church continues to be ‘church’. We felt that it is time to address young people in the church and, most importantly, their parents.”

The programme, which is run Sunday afternoon in participating churches in Guyana, informs parents about issues affecting their children and grandchildren and seeks to provide solutions to questions and issues raised by the youth. Professional peer educators, councilors and real life testimonies from the youth themselves are all part of the programme presented.

Pointing to the Survey of Sexual Practices’ finding that more than 2% of youth attending Evangelical Churches have tested positive for HIV, Pastor Williams says, “It’s time to get up and speak.”

The Survey of Sexual Practices of Youth Attending Evangelical Churches” was conducted in Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Vincent during 2009 with assistance from UNICEF. The full report of the survey is available at http://www.caribbeanevangelical.org/programmes/pdfs/ReportANTSLUSVG4.pdf
